2010 Counselor and Staff Profiles
All Profiles

Kevin Allen (Kayaking)
Kevin amazed us two summers ago as a first-year counselor and trip leader and we are very lucky that he has chosen to continue his work with kids at Kabeyun. Coming all the way from Steamboat Springs, CO where he graduated from a boarding school with an outdoor education focus, Kevin is passionate about kayaking and has the skills and sound judgement to make him a solid back country leader and instructor. He's also a competitive snowboarder in the winter months, traveling all over the country to national competitions. Kevin just completed his freshman year at Colorado State University.
Brady Alton (Hiking)
Brady will gradute next spring from North Carolina State University with a BA in Applied Psychology and a minor in Outdoor Leadership. He is an avid rock climber with a passion for back country adventure. Brady has been working most recently as the games coordinator for his local Boys and Girls Club of America, a non-profit after school program.
Mike Bell (Counseling Interns)
Mike is a full-time middle school English teacher in New Jersey who returns to Kabeyun for his ninth summer on staff. Mike ran the archery program for his first few summers before joining the hiking department for the next few. For the last four years he has assumed leadership of our counseling intern program, solidifying that program as a first-rate leadership training opportunity for our older campers. Mike knows and loves Kabeyun well. He has been assisting with staff training and is an important resource to fellow counselors, campers and the camp administration.
Evan Berry (Swimming)
Evan started at Kabeyun as a ten-year-old and returned for five summers before moving off to gain other experiences. He returned two years ago to join the swim staff and returns for his third year on staff in 2010. Evan just finished his first year at the University of Colorado which he used as a base for skiing and other adventure outings, along with his academic success.
Evan Bloom (Canoeing)
Evan is vying with Bill French for longest tenure at camp. Beginning as a nine-year-old camper, he returned for seven camper years before being accepted into the counseling intern program in 2005. He returns to teach canoeing and lead trips for his fifth year on staff - 13 years is a good start! Evan will be heading to West Virginia next year for his fourth year in college.
Jon Byrd (Climbing)
Jon is North Carolinian coming to us for his third year on staff. An avid outdorsman, he graduated from Appalachian State University and we are lucky enough that he is figuring out how to return to Kabeyun for more summers. This year Jon joins the climbing department, returning to his first love after two years working in the sailing department. He completed an intensive four-day American Mountain Guide Association top rope site management course to hone his skills as a leader on the rock.
Henry Cattan (Athletics)
This will be Henry's seventh summer at Kabeyun, and his first as a member of the staff. Last summer he participated in our counseling intern program; no better preparation for being an effective counselor at Kabeyun. Henry comes to us from his family's home in Qatar where they have been living for several years. Henry is a second generation Kabeyunite and we're looking forward to many summers ahead with Henry on staff.
Jesse Cobb (Tennis)
Jesse returns to Kabeyun for his second year on the staff with a solid background in both tennis and camp. A sophomore at James Madison University in Virgnia, Jesse plays club tennis there and has attended several years of Nike tennis camps, along with spending several summers as a camper at a traditional camp in Maine. Jesse heads up a solid tennis department!
Andy Cole (Leather)
We are excited to welcome Andy back to Kabeyun for his second year on staff. He is graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a double major in Studio Art and Economics - talk about balance! Andy brings his passion for art to one of the most popular project activities.
Bailey Cone (Nature)
Bailey joins us for her first year on the Kabeyun staff after a successful third year at Virginia Intermont College where she has honed her leadership skills as a Resident Assistant in her dormitory. Bailey has a passion for the outdoors and the natural world developed as she grew on her family's farm. She is a competitive dressage rider at VIC as well as a marketing major. We are very lucky to have her contagious energy to help drive our days at Kabeyun!
