Kabeyun – Boys Summer Camp New Hampshire – Annual Report

4,869 lbs.

That’s how much food waste Kabeyun diverted from the landfill and back into the earth last summer. Using small compost containers at each dining table, larger receptacles in the kitchen and at beach supper, and hearty Ziploc bags on trips, we collected almost 2.5 tons of organic waste over 9 weeks.

Lou Saviano of Renewal Compost collected the material weekly and brought it to J & F Farms, a 118 year-old family farm in Derry, NH. “That’s where the magic happens,” according to Lou. He and farmer Phil Ferdinando mixed the food scraps Lou collected from his commercial and residential clients with manure, leaves, and hay from the farm. Phil uses much of the finished compost on his farm; some is bagged for residential customers and for sale.

While there’s long been interest in composting at Kabeyun (campers from the 1970s may remember giving scraps to piglets who lived in a pen near Pine Point!), the logistics have proved challenging. We are very grateful to have found in Lou a partner who will come to Alton Bay each week and support our sustainability efforts!
