Springtime Work At Camp

by Jeff Kuebler /

It's kind of a weird feeling being back at camp now in late April.  Weird in the sense that it's like nothing at all happened in the months since leaving in mid-September of last year.  I know many have had this feeling.  Almost as if there's Kabeyun and all else is a distant dream.

In fact, sitting here writing this at Beechwood, I turn to the left looking out the window down towards the lake and see a small boat with an outboard motor on it and two guys aboard bundled up against the cold cruising along while fishing.  It always looks that way...well, maybe not the cold and maybe not the lack of our sailboats out there filled with Kabeyun campers.

The spring is an exciting time here even if maybe there are only five or six of us here working with only two actually living at camp right now.  Mark arrived this past Thursday, I last Monday while Bruce and Bill have been working here this winter.  Ken pops in and out frequently as will Jake shortly and Curtis towards the beginning of June.  And there are outside contractors who do work and come and go.

We're on the right side of things now as we get camp ready for the upcoming summer, seeing the weather improve and leaves begin a new life.  Unlike the fall when we're putting things away and shutting camp down.  Lots of work for everybody...I like to say that the only thing that happens naturally around here is that the leaves fall and the ice melts.  Everything else is left to us.  The work can be hard with lots of labor in inclement and even harsh conditions.  But it's ultimately positive and rewarding.  After all, we're working for y-o-u and that means every body who's ever been here in the past, is here now, and who will be in the future on all levels.
