7 Things Parents Should Know Before Sending Their Son to Summer Camp

Summer is the perfect time to send your son to a sleep-away summer camp. Whether you elect to attend a camp close to home or one that is a further away, it is a great experience for young boys. Sending their child to a summer camp for boys is one that many parents look forward to, as it reminds them of summers when they were young. But, attending camp yourself and sending your child to camp are very different. Here are 7 things parents should know before they send their son to camp.

  1. Pack Light. While at camp, your child will have limited space to keep all their things. The more you pack for them, the messier they will be. Additionally, children likely won’t wear half the clothes you pack for them. Don’t pack them extra clothes that they’ll need to keep track of while at camp.

  2. Don’t Obsess. As a parent, sending your son off to an overnight camp is a bittersweet moment. Try not to obsess about how they are doing or what they are doing at camp. Take a step back and take some time to focus on yourself. Choose a camp that you trust and you won’t have anything to worry about.

  3. Keep it Simple. When you pack your child’s clothes for camp, make sure they are organized and easy for your child to find. Ziploc bags work great for this. Additionally, at the end of the day, the Ziploc bag can serve as a place for your child to place their dirty clothes to keep them separate from clean ones.

  4. Take the Time for Yourself. The time that your child is at camp will fly by, so be sure to take some time for yourself and do something that you normally wouldn’t have time to do. Of course, you’ll still miss your child. But maybe while they’re away you’ll have time to go to a late movie, plan a spontaneous day trip or schedule a massage. Camp is not only a time for your child to relax and have fun, it’s an opportunity for you to relax too!

  5. Children Will Need Time to Adjust to Camp. While your child might be excited and anxious to go to camp, they might need some time to adjust once they arrive. Encourage your child to give camp their best effort. Don’t offer to pick them up if they don’t enjoy it. It can take a few days for most children to adjust to camp life. Give your child the opportunity to focus on camp without thinking about calling you to pick them up.

  6. Don’t Panic. It is easy and understandable for parents to worry when their children are out of sight. When your child is at camp, use your best judgment to determine the urgency of every complaint and issue that your child discusses with you. Trust your instincts, but try not to panic and rush to picking up your child early from camp.

  7. Let Your Child Grow. After everything is said and done, be prepared for your child to come back a little more grown up and with stories and memories to last a lifetime! At camp, your child will learn to face their fears, share space with others, and how to get along with everyone. When your child returns home they will be changed for the better.
