Offseason musings from the Director and other voices regarding Kabeyun’s philosophy and the role of camp in developing strong, confident, and caring boys.
As the year comes to a close, Kabeyun is looking back with gratitude at our safe and successful return to camp in 2021. During the summer, we asked some of our guys what they like about camp, what they learn here, and why they keep coming back. Enjoy these voices from 2021!
Every fall, we hear from parents who are delighted and amazed at the growth they see in their sons when they return from Kabeyun. This year, we received photos and a travelogue, too! It came from the parents of Eli and Jake R., brothers ages 9 and 11 who have distinguished themselves as dedicated, capable paddlers.
It’s interesting being at Kabeyun in the Thanksgiving season, and observing the feelings of gratitude it stirs in me even as camp is quiet and still.
My new perch in front of the crowd not only produced the name for this column, but also allowed me to observe all of camp at a single glance. So, what was the view from the whiteboard this summer?
Each week, Kabeyun campers and counselors head out on about two dozen hiking, climbing, paddling, and fishing trips all over New Hampshire and often into Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Sometimes, they're inspired to write about their trips when they return! Here is a sample of three 2021 'Trips Reports' from our weekly in-camp newspaper, The Log of the West Wind.
As Kabeyun prepares for its 98th season, we celebrate the folks who steered us through 2020's challenges, and look back with gratitude toward all of those who love and support camp. Thanks for being on this journey with us!
