Where Fun and Life Skills Blend in A Seamless Fashion Monday, October 2, 2017 Summer camps provide a wonderful opportunity for kids to learn new skills and acquire new hobbies when school's out and the pressure of the academics is temporarily relieved. And yet, summer camps are not only about fun and frolic. Ideally, it should also be a place where the boys, now for the most part on their own, get to learn valuable social and life skills which help place them in good stead for the future and help them grow up to be responsible and caring adults. At least, this was the motto which inspired the Boston school teacher John Porter to start the Kabeyun Summer Camp back in 1924. Porter believed that the boys in the camp will get to enjoy a taste of freedom but will also learn how to cope with the responsibilities that come in its wake. More than 90 years have passed since then but Porter's vision and his belief still remains the guiding principle for the Kabeyun community. It is chiefly this belief that distinguishes the Kabeyun Summer Camp, held by the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, from most other New Hampshire summer camps. At Kabeyun, boys can opt for an endless variety of sports, skills, pastimes and hobbies while they are at Kabeyun. There are facilities for traditional sports such as tennis, badminton, chess, archery, croquet, etc. but the lake as well as the rivers and the rapids located in the vicinity also offer an ideal opportunity to engage in a variety of water sports such as swimming, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, paddle board, canoeing, kayaking and so on. Or they can go on an exploration of the outlying hilly regions during hikes and other fun but challenging mountain sports sessions including ropes, orienteering and more. Then there are leather and woodshop, arts & crafts classes, and music sessions. In short, there is no dearth of activities that the boys can engage in, but what is the best part about Kabeyun is that the campers can choose their activities on a day-to-day basis. At breakfast, they can opt for two morning activities and again another two for the afternoon session during the lunch hour. Every age camper can opt for just about any activity that catches his fancy. They may choose to learn a new skill or may look to hone their skills in a sport or other activity with which they already share a degree of familiarity. And there are experienced counselors to help the boys along, but apart from them, the rest of Kabeyun staff is chiefly made of former campers and Kabeyun alumni who contribute a great deal in instilling the values of cooperation, good listening, decision making and consensus building—the values which make responsible citizens and members of the community out of our kids. This is where Kabeyun separates itself from other New Hampshire summer camps. So, come and discover Kabeyun for yourself!
